How do you explain the taste of a Steamed Milk, found in Hong Kong? Is it a pudding? Yes, it definitely is. However, it’s different from any pudding you’ve tasted in the states. It’s more than a pudding. It’s light, flavorful and delectable.  Yee Shun Milk (sometimes called Dairy) Company located on Lockhart Road in Causeway Bay is a no nonsense storefront, with a wide variety of flavors.  It’s nothing fancy.  In fact, you may not notice it passing by the bustling neon sections of Causeway.  But it’s a must stop for a quick pick me up.  I’ve never had Steamed Milk anywhere else before this trip to Hong Kong and nothing compares to it.  Now I make a beeline to get my fill everytime I’m in Hong Kong.

It’s inexpensive so you can order two flavors (or more) to try – which I did on my last trip.  I love chocolate and coffee flavors but they have the original (kind of like a vanilla), ginger, papaya and so on.  It’s the softest, smoothest pudding you will ever taste (aside from the egg pudding from Five Dynasties, which in itself is in its own category of pudding).

Chocolate Steamed Milk – simple but delightful

They serve food, more like a luncheon place, but the food is just okay. You come here for the Steamed Milk – it’s open late so it’s a great go-to place after a night on the town. Don’t expect much from the service; the staff is curt. Just keep your eye on the prize:  Steamed Milk! It’s pretty busy most times but it moves fast so don’t let a line stop you.  Possibly go early when it’s less crowded or on a weeknight.  You can get the Steamed Milk hot or cold (I prefer cold).  Just one more Hong Kong dessert to try in a city loaded with all kinds of culinary delights.
